Inspections of half fermented wine – so far without a nonconforming result

10/19/2009

As in previous years, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority has been carrying out inspections of half fermented wine sale in the course of the whole sale period, duration of which is defined by law – thus from 1 August to 30 November. Among others, inspectors have been checking hygiene conditions at the place of sale as well as documentation related to the sale of half fermented wine.  Labelling is also under control; the seller has to label the product correctly with its name and name of producer. The labelling ‘half fermented wine with added water’ is not acceptable according to law.
Currently, first continuous results of laboratory analyses of half fermented wine are already known. These analyses are aimed at revealing of possible adulteration which mostly occurs if half fermented wine is baptized’ with water. This is according to the Act on viticulture and viniculture forbidden. The samples are not taken randomly, but in a fully goal-directed way, after sensory assessment has been carried out on the spot.
The CAFIA laboratories in Brno have analyzed 10 samples of half fermented wine and 6 samples of partially fermented grape must so far. The latter differs from half fermented wine by the only fact that it was not made of inland grapes. In all six cases the must was made of Hungarian grapes. Neither in case of half fermented wines, nor in case of partially fermented grape must, a single sample ‘baptized’ with water has been revealed.

Table with first analyses‘results are to be found here.
