CAFIA warns against sesame seeds from India containing significantly high amount of unsafe substance

CAFIA sampled foodstuff Sezamová semínka (Sesame seeds) 100g Albert, best before date by: 15^th March 2021, lot: L20024, country of origin of the raw material: India, producer: Ing. Bohumil Kratochvíl – IBK Trade. CAFIA inspectors took the official sample in retail of company Albert Česká Republika s.r.o., Radlická 117, 158 00 Prague 5.

Analysis performed in an accredited laboratory detected presence of pesticide residue ethylenoxide significantly exceeding the limit, namely in concentration higher than 5.0 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg). However, the maximum limit for the residue in question laid down by relevant European Regulation is 0.05 mg/kg in sesame. The lot concerned was banned.

Pesticide ethylenoxide is not authorised in the European Union as an effective substance for the use in for plant protection preparations.

In relation to foodstuff Sezamová semínka (Sesame seeds) 100 g Albert, best before date by: 15^th March 2021, lot: L20024, country of origin of the raw material: India, the CAFIA Inspectorate in Prague took a measure of a general nature (ref.: SZPI/DK193-1/2020 of 11^th December 2020) banning all food business operators on the territory of the Czech Republic from placing of the lot in question on the market, namely including lots of the sesame seeds which were made of the checked lot. The measure of a general nature is binding also for further operators possessing the given lot and place it on the market. CAFIA took the measure in compliance with provision of Section 5 Article 6 of Act No. 146/2002 Coll.

Measure of a general nature is available on electronic official desks of all CAFIA Inspectorates available on the CAFIA website as well as on physical official desks of single Inspectorates.

CAFIA further sampled foodstuff SEZAM LOUPANÝ (PEELED SESAME), 100 g, best before date by: 31^st December 2021, country of origin: India, producer: Racional CZ s.r.o. CAFIA sampled the foodstuff at the premises of company Racional CZ s. r. o., Vraclav 5, 565 42 Vraclav. Presence of pesticide residue ethylenoxide significantly exceeding the limit was found in the lot, namely the amount was higher than 5.0 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg). The lot concerned was banned.

To this date, CAFIA inspectors sampled the total of 10 samples of sesame seeds, out of which six samples failed to comply due to the content of ethylenoxide exceeding the permitted limit. However, only the two above mentioned samples reached the retail network. CAFIA banned the inspected persons from placing the deficient lots of the foodstuff on the market and further ordered immediate withdrawal already sold parts of the lot from all purchasers.

At the same time, CAFIA takes precautionary steps to prevent access of non-compliant sesame seeds from India onto the Czech market. In the course of this week, CAFIA orders operators importing, packaging or distributing pure sesame seeds or mixtures containing sesame from India to perform laboratory analyses focused on the presence of pesticide ethylenoxide. As a result, only lots with a compliant result regarding presence of ethylenoxide will be released on the market.

SZPI strongly recommends that all consumers who purchased foodstuffs 1) Sezamová semínka (Sesame foods) 100 g Albert, best before date by: 15. 3. 2021, lot L20024, country of origin: India, 2) SEZAM LOUPANÝ (PEELED SESAME) 100 g, best before date by 31. 12. 2021, country of origin: India that they do not eat them.
