Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority detects rice porridge for young children containing aflatoxins

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) has identified the following non-compliant food product as part of its inspection activities:

Nature’s Promise BIO Rice Porridge with Strawberries and Raspberries, batch/lot number LOT 50426, with a best-before date of 31 July 2027. Additional information: food for young children from 12 months of age; agricultural production: EU/non-EU; additional information: SK-BIO-002.

Analysis carried out in an accredited CAFIA laboratory demonstrated that the food contained approximately seven times the maximum permitted level of aflatoxin B1, at 0.69 µg/kg (micrograms per kilogram), whereas the maximum legal limit for aflatoxins is 0.1 µg/kg.

CAFIA requested a risk assessment from the National Institute of Public Health. Based on the above findings, the Institute concluded that the food constitutes food injurious to health within the meaning of Article 14(2)(a) of Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council.

CAFIA inspectors sampled the non-compliant food at the premises of Albert Česká republika, s.r.o., Ečerova 1148/2a, 635 00 Brno, and ordered its immediate withdrawal from the retailer’s market supply.

The supplier of the food is King Food Bohemia, s.r.o., Husinecká 903/10, 130 00 Prague 3, Czech Republic.

Aflatoxins belong to a group of mycotoxins produced as a result of fungal metabolism. They are classified as carcinogenic substances and may occur in food as a result of fungal contamination.

CAFIA will initiate administrative proceedings against the inspected entity concerning the imposition of a fine.

CAFIA has entered information about the finding into the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) to enable further investigation in the country of origin of the food.
