The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA), in cooperation with the Customs Office for the Central Bohemian Region, seized a shipment of 12,714 kg of pistachios (PISTACHIO JUMBO) originating from Iran. Laboratory analysis conducted in an accredited laboratory confirmed that the levels of aflatoxin B1 and the total sum of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2 exceeded the maximum permitted limits by approximately five times.
The affected batch was marked LOT: 795 and was imported into the Czech Republic by the company JH MACHINE s.r.o., Nádražní 248, Chrastava 463 31. The supplier in the country of origin is Kerman Dordaneh Pistachios Co., 4th km Zangi Abad Road, Kerman, Iran.
CAFIA inspectors collected the sample during third-country import control at the Customs Office inspection point in Rudná (Central Bohemian Region), in the area of a temporary/customs warehouse.
The entire shipment was detained by the inspectors before it could enter the Czech market.
Aflatoxins belong to a group of mycotoxins that are produced as metabolic by-products of molds and are classified as carcinogenic substances. Aflatoxins can occur in food products, particularly in tree nuts such as pistachios, due to mold contamination. The import of dried tree nuts from certain countries — including pistachios from Iran — is subject to a special regime of enhanced official control.
The inspection authority reported the finding to the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
