CAFIA banned four lots of adulterate wine from abroad

06/09/2023

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) has detected four lots of white wine in which a laboratory analysis performed by the CAFIA accredited laboratory in Brno confirmed adulteration by unauthorised addition of a synthetic flavouring. This inspection was a part of CAFIA’s ongoing intensive quality and safety inspections of the market.

The product in question was Viña Mercedes, Chardonnay, produced by Bodegas FERNANDO CSTRO S.L., 13730 Santa Cruz de Mudela, CIUDAD REAL, country of origin: Spain. Three lots (L-10.01.23, L-07.09.22, L-12.01.23) were taken at the retail network of Tesco Stores ČR a.s. and one lot (L-09.01.23) at Albert Česká republika, s.r.o.

CAFIA inspectors ordered both inspected persons to immediately withdraw the lots concerned from the market network.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure with the inspected persons to impose a fine.

Aromatic substances enter wine naturally from the grapes. Further aromas originate during the fermentation and ageing process. Addition of artificial - synthetic - flavourings is one of the serious unauthorised practices during the production of wine.
