For several weeks now, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) has been focusing on the safety of cereals and cereal mill products originating mainly from the Ukraine. 63 samples have been taken for inspection so far. For 25 samples, the analyses have already been finalised, and all assessed parameters are satisfactory. Laboratory analyses of other samples are ongoing, and in case of detection of a non-compliant sample, CAFIA will immediately inform consumers and take appropriate measures.
"CAFIA is doing its utmost to protect domestic consumers, but at the same time, it is necessary to stress that the primary responsibility for safety and quality parameters of imported and domestic food lies with the operators concerned.", CAFIA Director General Martin Klanica highlighted.
As regards cereals, CAFIA inspectors took samples of wheat, spelt, corn, rye and barley to be checked. As regards cereal mill products, inspectors took samples of wheat flour, spelt flour (and flakes), rye flour (and flakes), barley flakes, and barley (including barley flakes) for inspection. CAFIA continues with the sampling.
CAFIA performs analyses in accordance with legislation requirements and in accredited laboratories only. Given the range of substances to be determined, this is a process and time-consuming procedure.
CAFIA assesses presence of more than 400 types of pesticide residues in particular together with mycotoxins, heavy metals, and, depending on the risk analysis, also further parameters.
Through the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), CAFIA is in touch with its European partners in order to respond immediately to any findings.
