Warning to consumers: Pyrrolizidine alkaloids in herbal tea

03/28/2023

During its inspection activities, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) found herbal tea with almost 15 times higher content of pyrrolizidine alkaloids then it is permitted by legislation. CAFIA strongly advises all consumers who may have the food lot in question at home not to consume it.

The food is labelled as follows: Energy - herbal tea mixture, packaging à 1 kg, best before date: 12/24, lot: Nr. 0172081222, producer: company BYLINY Mikeš s.r.o., Číčenice 114, 387 71 Číčenice.

The analysis in the CAFIA accredited laboratory confirmed the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (sum) amounting to 2,929 µg/kg (micrograms per kilogram), while the maximum permissible amount laid down by legislation is 200 µg/kg only. The operator thus violated Regulation (EC) No. 1881/2006 setting maximum limits for certain contaminants in foodstuffs.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are substances with known negative effects on human health.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure with the inspected person to impose a fine.
