CAFIA ordered to withdraw food supplement with six times exceeded limit for mercury

06/24/2022

During inspections of e-commerce, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) found a non-compliant food - a food supplement, and immediately banned its sale. It is loose powder in a plastic bag with following information on the labelling: DiatomPlus Food Diatomaceous Earth packaged à 250 g, best before date: 11/23.

Laboratory analysis of the sample confirmed the presence of the heavy metal mercury amounting to 0.6 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg), however, relevant legislation sets the limit for mercury no higher than 0.1 mg/kg. The operator has thus violated the obligation laid down by Commission Regulation (EC) No. 1881/2006 for exceeding the maximum limit for the contaminant in question.

The inspectors sampled the foodstuff in e-shop www.bioplaneta.org run by Martina Bartoníčková, based in Tymákov 276, 332 01.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person.

CAFIA strongly recommends consumers who have the foodstuff labelled this way at home that they do not eat it.
