Advice for consumers and sellers of non-prepacked blueberries: sale in weight units only

06/07/2021

During the past selling season, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) received an increasing number of consumers’ suggestions related to the practice of some sellers offering fresh non-prepacked blueberries in volume units (litres) and not in weight units (kilograms). In their suggestions, consumers pointed to the difference between the volume of the goods at the moment of the purchase and after brought home. Some consumers stated a drop in the volume up to 20%.

CAFIA informs sellers of non-prepacked blueberries that pursuant to applicable legislation, a food business operator shall provide consumers with information of foodstuffs which must not be misleading, in particular as regards the amount. Legislation further stipulates that information of the amount shall be fixed, unequivocal and verifiable.

With regard to the fact that during the sale in volume units also factors such as “shaking down” of blueberries or “air amount” purchased together with the goods play their role, the sale in litres is significantly less reliable indicator of the amount compared to weight units, thus kilograms.

CAFIA inspectors will insist on the sale of non-prepacked blueberries or loose fruit in weight units unlike volume units. With regard to the fact that the majority of sellers have already been preferring weight units, CAFIA does not anticipate problems in this relation. Related acts of the inspectors in this season will be in particular preventive and educative in case non-compliance is detected, unless problems are repeated.
