Within the inspection of Internet sale, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) detected a food supplement containing substance amygdaline over the limit. This substance metabolises to hydrogen cyanide and cyanides in human body.
Food supplement ProfiVit Vitamin B17, 210 capsules, producer: ProFivit s.r.o. (Slovakia) is concerned. CAFIA inspectors took the sample on https://enerex-vitaminy.cz, which aims in particular at Czech consumers; information on the goods is provided in Czech language and they could be purchased for CZK.
Laboratory analysis of the food sample confirmed presence of substance amygdalin amounting to 493 milligrams (mg) in one recommended daily dosage, which corresponds up to 29 mg of hydrogen cyanide after metabolising. According to the statement of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), dosage ranking among 0.5 and 3.5 mg per 1 kg of body weight is life threatening, i.e. amount 35 – 245 mg for a 70 kg weighing person.
With regard to the fact that the presence of amygdalin this is not a case of coincidental contamination, but intentionally added substance, CAFIA ordered withdrawal not only of the assessed lot, but all batches of the product from the market.
CAFIA strongly warns all consumers against consumption of the food supplement in question.
Food Inspection Authority sent notification into the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed RASFF which enabled further investigation and adoption of measures in the country of origin of the foodstuff concerned.
