CAFIA notifies (not only) new e-shop operators how to prevent violation of legislation

04/27/2020

In connection with spreading of the COVID-19 disease and the emergency state, the number of e-shops offering foodstuffs has significantly increased as well as the number of entrepreneurs who extended their food businesses enabling ordering their goods on-line.

Selling foodstuffs via Internet – by means of e-shops, social networks, etc. – comprises the necessity to keep rules of which aim is to protect consumers particularly against unsafe foodstuffs and unfair business practices. With regard to the fact that online sale of foodstuffs is a new situation for a range of operators and they may not be aware of certain obligations, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority updated document “Internet sale of foodstuffs – elementary requirements for food business operators” where main obligations specific for Internet sale of foodstuffs are summarised (the document is available in Czech language only). This document, which is available on the CAFIA website in Section Entrepreneurs, may significantly help in preventing unintentional violation of legislation.

Beside other things, food business operators selling on Internet have to comply with following obligations:

  • placing safe foodstuffs on the market only,
  • providing consumers with similar information which can be obtained in  an ordinary retail by reading food labelling or shelf label,
  • providing information on himself/herself – on the operator of the e-shop including contact information,
  • making trade terms available,
  • respecting rights of consumers and avoiding the use of unfair business practices,
  • registering at CAFIA which applies also to operators who had already been registered if Internet sale is not indicated on the list of their original activities (registration can be made by means of the form available on the CAFIA websites).

These and further obligations are explained in detail in the above-mentioned material.
