CAFIA checks showed that third of olive oils mislead consumers

11/14/2019

Results of the inspection activity performed by the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) focused on the quality of olive oils sold in the CR showed that each third assessed sample misled consumers. The assessed olive oils failed to comply with labelling “extra virgin” as oils of lower category were offered in reality.

Inspectors took the total of 28 samples of olive oils originated in various countries which were delivered to the Czech market. The aim of the CAFIA inspection activity was to verify whether extra virgin and virgin oils comply with physical, chemical and sensory parameters stipulated by Commission Regulation (EHS) 2568/91.

The analyses performed in accredited Laboratory of Olive Oil Tasting in Slovenia and also in CAFIA accredited laboratory confirmed that despite the labelling 9 “extra virgin” oils were not extra virgin oils but there were oils of lower category. Czech consumers were thus misled by untrue information on the labelling.

In 4 cases  oils from Greece were concerned, in 2 cases the oils originated in Spain, in 1 case in Italy, and 2 non-compliant samples came from the European Union. The total summary of all non-compliant samples is available in the attached table. Results of the inspections carried out in the course of several years show that imported olives oils often fail to comply with the given category and insinuate that importers underestimate the ability of Czech supervisory bodies to assess the quality of olive oils. Although the CR is not producing country of this type of foodstuffs, the level of inspection of olive oils on the domestic market is performed in compliance with standards stipulated by European legislation, namely in accredited laboratories both in the CR and abroad.

CAFIA will continue with these inspections of quality and safety of olive oils in the same intensity in the next year as well. CAFIA also provides supervisory authorities in the relevant countries with information of the detected non-compliant samples.

CAFIA ordered the sellers to withdraw the non-compliant lots from the market and will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine.
