CAFIA found 3 cases of misleading of consumers as regards beef and dozens of cases of missing purchasing documents

02/11/2019

Since the beginning of the case of non-compliant Polish beef, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) has been paying an intensive intention to inspection of this commodity not only in the retail network but also in the premises of public catering (restaurants, pubs, bistros), where, inter alia, checks particularly the truth of the information on the origin of meat offered to consumers and correct way of informing. The attention is also paid to verification of purchasing documents and checks whether foodstuffs of unknown origin are placed on the market. To this date, more than 1,100 inspections were carried out.

Inspection results found since the beginning of the case insinuated that the food business operators are more careful as regards the given commodity, however, current results of the intensive inspections in all regions of the CR show that consumers are misled as regards the origin of meat, and also that the conditions of documentation proving the origin and traceability of meat are not all right.

Consumers were misled as regards the country of origin of meat in 3 cases:

- Restaurace Mexita Hradec s.r.o., Velké náměstí 148/11, Hradec Králové. The inspected person offered a foodstuff made of meat originating in Brazilia “Argentinská roštěná - 200 g STEAK RIB EYE Z MLADÉHO BÝČKA“ (Argentinian rib eye beef – bull calf).

- PIZZERIE CIAO – CIAO s.r.o., Teplická 365/60, Děčín. "CARNE DI MANZO - CHLAZENÉ HOVĚZÍ MASO ARGENTINA" (chilled beef from Argentina) was offered to consumers, however, the meat originated in Brasilia.

- NATIONAL RESTAURANT s.r.o., Nehrova 26/3a, Mariánské Lázně 353 01. The meal labelled as “Carpaccio made of South American Beef sirloin with wild rocket leaves and Parmesan flakes” contained, according to information on the labelling, meat originating in the Netherlands.

In the total of 48 cases, the operators failed to show purchasing documents related to the used raw materials when they were supposed to do so during the inspection, therefore they were asked to show them additionally. Truth on the origin of the beef offered to consumers could be then assessed. The list of non-compliant detections thus does not have to be final.

Meat stored in two premises was assessed on the spot as unsuitable for human consumption (meat with expired use by date and spoilt meat) and inspectors imposed a ban on its placing on the market.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected persons.
