Warning for consumers: CAFIA found baby water contaminated by chlorine

11/21/2014

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) ordered company Kaufland Česká republika v. o. s. to immediately withdraw foodstuff Aqua Anna kojenecká voda neperlivá packaged à 5 l (still baby water) with best before date by 17th September 2015, produced by: Aqua Nova s.r.o., Radiměř 88. Sensory analysis of the sample confirmed smell after chlorine and subsequent laboratory analysis detected content of free chlorine amounting to 0.12 mg/l. Relevant Decree does not permit occurrence of free chlorine in bottled baby waters. No foreign substances can be added in such products, except for carbon dioxide. European Regulation No. 178/2002 was thus violated, as unsafe foodstuff was offered for sale (target consumers’ group – infants).
Investigation of the case showed that the producer supplied 3.944 packages of the contaminated lot of the bottled baby water. CAFIA recommends all consumers who may have the lot in question at home, they do not serve it to infants. CAFIA also carried out an inspection at the producer and will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine.
