CAFIA banned unsafe popcorn sold in Tesco

11/17/2014

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) entered information on detection of unsafe foodstuff TESCO Corn Beans into the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF). Grains of maize for preparation in microwave, weight 500 g, lot L04, best before date by 26th August 2015 are concerned. Laboratory analysis carried out by CAFIA showed presence of mycotoxin fumonisin B1 and B2 amounting to 4,395 μg/kg. However, relevant legislation lays down the maximum admissible amount 1.000 μg/kg. Offering a foodstuff with fourfold higher concentration of fuminosin compared to the limit, the seller violated Commission Regulation No. 1881/2006. CAFIA therefore ordered  company TESCO Stores ČR, a.s to immediately withdraw the lot in question from all its premises and will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine. Further investigation of the case revealed that the seller imported 3,840 non-compliant packages of the foodstuff into the CR from its supplier GILAN TRADING KFT., HU, 2071 Páty KEREKDOMBI U.7., Hungary. CAFIA recommends all consumers who may have the given lot of the product at home they do not eat it.
