The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) revealed a serious case of adulteration of fruit jams, of which analysis proved that significant proportion of fruit was supplemented with a different component. The products were sampled in Levné potraviny, s.r.o. on Lipová steet No. 819 in Most. Following products made by company Gülsan Gida Sanayi Ticaret A.S. based in Organize Sanayi Bölgesi 8, Cadde No: 17 Kayseri – Turkey are concerned:
- Gülsan PREMIUM Malinový džem (raspberry jam) packaged à 280 g with best before date by “03. 2016”. The producer indicated on the labelling that the jam contained 60% of raspberries, however, the laboratory analysis proved only 14.7% of raspberries in the content of the packaging.
- Gülsan PREMIUM Ostružinový džem (blackberry jam) packaged à 280 g with best before date by “03. 2016“. The producer indicated on the labelling that the jam contained 60% of blackberries, however, the laboratory analysis proved only 21.9% of blackberries in the content of the packaging.
In this relation, the inspected person violated Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002 by putting foodstuffs with misleading information into circulation. CAFIA ordered the operator to immediately withdraw the adulterated lots of foodstuffs from sale, namely from all his premises. CAFIA will also initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with company Levné potraviny s.r.o. which is, as the investigation showed, not only the seller but also the importer of the foodstuffs into the CR.
The amount of fruit in jams is detected on the basis of a series of laboratory measuring of chemical and organic substances. Detection of adulteration of the fruit component in such extent can be regarded as extraordinary. During the first six months of 2014 alone, CAFIA took 65 samples of so-called fruit spreads (group comprising also jams) in total, out of which 6 samples failed to comply with quality requirements as regards lower content of the fruit component and lower refraction (added sugars).
