CAFIA warns against food supplements containing unauthorised substances

Within an inspection carried out by the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) focused on distribution and sale of food supplements , 11 lots of products at which laboratory analysis proved presence of unauthorised substances posing a threat to human health were banned from putting into circulation. Their risk was increased as the unauthorised substances could be consumed without knowledge of consumers since information on their presence was missing on the labelling. CAFIA found following unauthorised substances in various food supplements:
  • Glibenclamide – pharmacologically effective substance used particularly in medicaments for diabetes, however, it is banned from using in foodstuffs. The substance affects metabolism of sugars in human body and its unknowing consumption by a diabetic may pose a risk to health or even life (for example if a patient uses prescribed medicaments with glibenclamide, the total dosage of the effective substance is increased due to the use of a food supplement with missing information on the presence of this substance).
  • Aconitine, hypaconitine and mesaconitine are alkaloids of plant called aconite, of which use in foodstuffs is not allowed.
  • 1-dehydroandrostenedione (also known as boldione) – a substance belonging to the group of anabolic androgenic steroids, at which a range of undesirable side effects is reported, i.e. heart rhythm disorder, boost of prostate carcinoma and breast cancer, etc. The substance is banned from using in food industry, and at the same time it is present on the list of substances forbidden by Government Regulation No. 454/2009 Coll., as a substance with a doping effect, of which consumption by a sportsperson may be proved by a doping test.
  • Sildenafil and tadalafil – substances used in medicaments for erective dysfunction accessible in prescription only medicaments, of which use is not permitted in food industry.
  • Tetrahyxdrocanabilol (THC) – substance, of which use is not permitted in food industry.
  • Progesterone – substance from the group of endogenous steroid hormones at which a range of negative side effects is reported. It is contained in prescription only medicaments, however, its presence in food supplements sold over the counter is undesirable.

CAFIA strongly recommends consumers they do not consume the lots of non-compliant food supplements listed below. CAFIA banned putting of the given lots into circulation and will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected persons.
