CAFIA banned “instant tea” with tiny content of tea

07/23/2014

During its inspection at a producer of instant tea, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) took samples from two lots, at which laboratory analysis showed non-compliant values of tea extract content. Following products of company LN GROUP s.r.o. based in Dolany 683 in Olomouc region were concerned:
Instant tea LESNÍ PLODY (WILD BERRIES) packaged ŕ 400 g with best before date by 23rd November 2015, producer LN GROUP s.r.o., lot L2, country of origin: Czech Republic. Information on the labelling provided consumers with information on the content of black tea extract amounting to 0.25%, however, the CAFIA laboratory analysis confirmed presence of no more than 0.02% of the black tea extract only.
Instant tea CITRON (LEMON) packaged ŕ 400 g with best before date by 5th March 2015, producer LN GROUP s.r.o., lot L3, country of origin: Czech Republic. Information on the labelling provided consumers with information on the content of black tea extract also amounting to 0.25%, however, the CAFIA laboratory analysis again confirmed presence of no more than 0.02% of the black tea extract only.
With regard to the fact that the information given on the labelling misled consumers, CAFIA banned putting the unsatisfactory lots into circulation and will initiate administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the producer.
Beverage prepared according to the instruction given on the labelling of the lots in question contains substances typical for tea in amount by two orders lower than black tea compared to tea prepared from tea bags that contains 100 – 300 mg caffeine in 1 litre of tea in average.
