CAFIA constantly detects adulterated food supplements with lower content of effective substances

07/17/2014

Despite regular publishing on the Food Pillory, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority repeatedly reveals serious forms of adulteration of food supplements. Nearly eightfold lower content of the effective substance in capsules compared to the information on the food labelling were shown by a laboratory analysis of food supplements sold in shops as well as on the Internet. Sellers and producers thus mislead consumers that get a product with significantly lower content of the effective substance than they legitimately expect. CAFIA presently found following non-compliant food samples in the retail network:
  • Green Coffee Bean, green coffee packaged à 30 tablets, best before date: 10/2015. Label on the consumers’ packaging provided following information: Contains 400 mg of natural caffeine in one capsule, however, the laboratory analysis carried out by CAFIA proved presence of caffeine only in the amount of 46 mg in one capsule, which means that presence of the effective substance is eight times lower compared to the statement on the labelling. CAFIA took the sample of the defective lot sold by Slevomat.cz. Company GMR TECHNOLOGY s.r.o. from Opava imported the product into the Czech Republic and Chinese company XIAN TIANXINGJIAN NATURAL BIO-PRODUTS CO. LTD was then the producer indicated in the accompanying documentation.
  • 3 in 1 Joint Complex packaged à 120 tablets, best before date: 12/3/2017. The label of the supplement states: Content in 1 tablet: …Chondroitin sulphate – 150 mg, however, the laboratory analysis carried out by CAFIA proved presence of no more than 78.46 mg of the substance in question. CAFIA took the defective lot in the premises of Pavel Trampota on Sousedská street in Plzeň. Accompanying documentation showed that Jiří Trampota based in Prague was the supplier, and company MEGA – PRO s.r.o. based also in Prague was the producer of the products concerned.
  • Glucosamine Chondroitin – special combination for joint nutrition, packaged à 100 capsules, best before date: 21. 8. 2015. The label of the supplements states: Content of 1 tablet – Glucosamine sulphate – 600 mg and Chondroitin sulphate – 150 mg, however, the laboratory analysis carried out by CAFIA proved presence of no more than 429.26 mg of the glucosamine sulphate and only 129.83 mg of the chondroitin sulphate.
CAFIA ordered to withdraw promptly the lots in question from the retail network and will initiate an administrative procedure with the inspected persons on imposition of a fine.
