During the inspection of foreign sparkling wines offered in retail shops in the CR, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (hereinafter “CAFIA” only) found 11 products which failed to meet legal requirements. The Inspection Authority took 22 samples for laboratory analysis in 14 retail shops. In total 248 analyses and assessments were carried out. The Inspection Authority aimed sampling at the pre-Christmas time when the interest of consumers in this assortment is on the top.

In case of 11 non-complying samples, CAFIA found 18 violations of legislation. Three samples failed to meet quality requirements – sparkling wines had unnatural smell, and unpleasant taste caused by strong oxidase occurred in two cases and one product smelled after lactic acid fermentation due to undesired biological processes. In case of two products, CAFIA analysis revealed presence of citric acid exceeding the limit. Furthermore, one of these samples contained exceeded sugar concentration. Overpressure in a bottle was measured in case of three samples. Five samples were labelled incorrectly or insufficiently. Following data were incorrect: obligatory indication of the provenance and sugar content were missing, and three producers labelled sparkling wine with term “natural” which is not permissible.

During the inspection CAFIA imposed ban on putting five lots of unsatisfactory sparkling wines into circulation and imposed 11 measures. CAFIA will initiate an administration procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected persons.
