Pre-Christmas Inspection: Nuts and dried fruit unsuitable for human consumption

12/07/2013

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) warns consumers about two sorts of foodstuffs (3 lots in total) unsuitable for human consumption which may cause health complications. Unsatisfactory products were detected within inspections focused on the assortment that consumers often seek in the pre-Christmas time. Following lots of foodstuffs are concerned:

1. Sušené meruňky IBK Trade (dried apricots) – processed fruit, packaged à 100 g with best before date by 4th April 2014, produced by Ing. Bohumil Kratochvíl IBK TRADE based in Prague.

The inspection in Kaufland Česká republika v.o.s. at Polská street in Náchod revealed that white pests visible to the naked eye were present inside closed bags which also smelt of fermentation after opening. Presence of white pests was also detected in another lot of the same products – with best before date by 9th May 2014. Foodstuffs contaminated with pests and decaying foodstuffs are not admissible for human consumption, and the Inspection Authority therefore imposed ban on putting these foodstuffs into circulation and ordered the producer to withdraw the goods from all branches of Kaufland. The bans were imposed in compliance with requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002.
2. Vlašské ořechy ALNATURA – walnuts packaged à 150 g with best before date by 5th May 2014, produced by Alnatura GmbH, Germany, raw materials originating from Moldova.
The inspection in Globus ČR k. s. at Poděbradova street in Pardubice revealed that content of all bags smelt of rancid fat and walnuts tasted the same way. Decaying foodstuffs are not admissible for human consumption and the Inspection Authority therefore imposed ban on putting these foodstuffs into circulation, and ordered the producer to withdraw the goods from all branches of Globus in the CR. The bans were imposed in compliance with requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002.
CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected persons. CAFIA has detected 13 lots of shelled or dried fruits affected by pests since September. Summary of serious findings of CAFIA is available on www.potravinynapranyri.cz.
