CAFIA banned wafers distributed by Tesco Stores CR

11/24/2013

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (hereinafter “CAFIA” only) ordered Tesco Stores ČR, a. s. to withdraw immediately unsatisfactory foodstuff Wafers chocolate& hazelnut OATLAND, Oplatky s lísko-ořechovým krémem máčené v čokoládě – chocolate coated wafers with hazelnut cream, packaged à 400 g, best-before-date by 18. 3. 2014, country of origin: Poland. The producer provided following information on the labelling: “It may contain traces of other dry fruits and peanuts.” Laboratory analyses revealed presence of peanuts in the amount of 2,324 milligrams per kilogram. This amount exceeded approximately hundred times the maximum trace amount for peanuts. Due to the fact that the product contains bigger amount of allergen (peanuts) than declared on the labelling, it fails to meet requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002. It is a misleadingly labelled foodstuff that could cause serious health complications to people allergic to peanuts.

Further investigation at the premises of the seller revealed that company Tesco Stores ČR, a.s. put into circulation all 932 pieces of the unsatisfactory lot. Based on the measure imposed by CAFIA, 669 pieces of the product were withdrawn. Consumers thus bought 263 pieces and the Inspection Authority recommends that all consumers allergic to peanuts do not consume the product in question. CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person.
