Penny Market keeps in misleading on “Czech Quality”

02/21/2012

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority carried out repeated inspections with the aim to verify whether and how retail chain Penny Market fulfilled the measure, according to which it had to prevent misleading of consumers during offering of products under the label “Czech Quality”. The inspectors found out that the imposed measures have not been met so far.
Goods labelled as “Czech Quality” and with the CR flag originate, in certain cases, outside the Czech Republic. Consumers may thus have false impression that they buy a foodstuff produced in the Czech Republic.
To promote the products, the chain uses further collocations, such as “Buy Pretty Czech”, “From Czech Farmers”, “Wide Offer of Czech Brands”, “Regional Suppliers” etc., which are similar to “Czech Quality”.
Three products from Poland and Slovakia presented as Czech products were concerned by the original detection. Further misleadingly offered foodstuffs were found during subsequent inspections.
Farmer bread made by a German producer was provided with label “FROM CZECH BAKERS”. Under label “FROM CZECH BUTCHERS”, customers could find salami with pepper, salami with cheese and spice, and salami with paprika and pepper which were also produced in Germany.
Also following goods were labelled as “Czech Quality”:

CAFIA regards this attitude as flagrant violation of food law. Administrative proceeding will be launched not only for misleading of consumers but also for failing to meet the measure that had been imposed on the chain.
