Stall sale control 2011
The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority carried out 1528 controls of 186 open-air-markets mainly farmers´markets this year. Inspectors were checking food quality and safety, fulfilment of compulsory registration, sanitary requirements, labelling and presentation of food offered for sale, its traceability, expiration dates and maintenance of the cold chain.
Breach of obligations during stall sale was detected in 207 cases. The most common shortcomings of stallholders were connected with sanitary requirements and with food labelling. Sometimes they also didn´t have certificate of food origin. Relatively frequent offence was keeping food which needs to be cold outside the cooling system. Some stallholders of food sold in bulk which is being divided didn´t establish adequate tools and hands hygiene. Moreover, food sold in bulk has to be protected against dust, touching the ground and direct contact with seller´s or customer´s hands. The inspectors found that in a number of cases these conditions weren´t observed by the stallholders.
During the controls CAFIA´s inspectors explain to the stallholders their obligations and also thoroughly verify whether the imposed measures are fulfilled. The shortcomings were mostly eliminated during the control and it was not necessary to impose major sanctions to the stallholders. However, in a number of cases administrative proceedings were initiated.
In spite of the above mentioned shortcomings it can be summarized that according to the control findings majority of stallholders observe the legislation vis-a-vis the stall sale and food offered for sale, sanitary facilities and other requirements for this type of establishments are in compliance with the legislation.
Christmas markets in Hradec Králové and Pardubice region – December 2011
“This time of year CAFIA´s control focuses on marketplaces and typical Christmas food. We pay attention that the Christmas atmosphere is not disturbed by dishonest or ignorant sellers and that consumers are not being mislead at the marketplaces,” says CAFIA´s Director General Jakub Šebesta about December controls of marketplaces. “The main aim of the controls is to draw attention of sellers to the shortcomings, counsel them and supervise that the shortcomings are soon rectified,” he adds.
Controls of marketplaces in Pardubice, Hradec Králové, Náchod, Vrchlabí, Chrudim, Trutnov, Jičín, Heřmanův Městec and Přelouč within the competence of CAFIA´s Inspectorate in Hradec Králové were carried out during December 2011. Overall 63 stands were controlled, breach of the legal requirements for placing food on the market was detected at 9 of them.
In particular, typical Christmas commodities were controlled, inter alia, confectionery and sweets, bakery products as a pretzels, pies, sweet breads, and gingerbreads, honey and mead, spices and dry fruits, cheese and also tea and coffee.
In two cases food of Polish origin was sold without labelling in Czech. Based on this finding a measure prohibiting sale of more than 100 kg food, mostly confectionery, has been issued.

Moreover, a smaller number of vegetables showing signs of rotting has been banned. Inspectors also found garlic from Poland misleadingly labelled as of Czech origin. In one case it was found out that an operator was selling mead produced by a company not registered with CAFIA.
