During an inspection carried out by the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority at the premises of AHOLD Czech Republic, a. s. company at Tuklatská in Prague 10, the inspectors found packaged cheeses with repeatedly re-labelled use by dates. This way of marketing of foodstuffs thus misled consumers.
This detection concerned two products with name “Eidam salam smoked 40%” on which even mould was visible. CAFIA immediately banned further putting these products into circulation.
“Although only two pieces of unsafe foodstuffs were concerned in this case, CAFIA takes such detections very seriously. Misleading of consumers such way is not only significant violation of applicable legislation but also undermining of trust in business ethics in the food sector perceived by consumers,” Jakub Šebesta, Director General of CAFIA, said.
Both cheeses were placed in a self-service cooling box in the delicatessen section. Following data were given on the labels: packaged on 3.2.2012, use by date: 9.2.2012. However, the check showed that there were other labels under labels and they contained different dates of production and use by dates. One cheese was re-labelled even twice. The first of the samples was thus gradually re-labelled with use by date by 21.1.2012, 29.1.2012 and finally by 9.2.2012. The second one was, according to the original label, supposed to be consumed by 3.2.2012.
Expression “Use by date” signifies the usable life of foodstuffs. After this date, it is not allowed to put goods labelled such way into circulation and thus to sell to consumers.
Administrative proceeding on the imposition of a fine will be launched with the inspected person.
