Adulterated jams from Poland

11/29/2011

Two Polish jams containing significantly less fruit than was declared on the label were found by inspectors of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) in the market chain.
In the sample of Danish Choice Strawberry jam (340 g, best before date 20. 06. 2013), the analysis detected only 22, 4 % share of strawberries, although the labelling promised customers 40 %.
Product STOVIT Selection Apricot dia jam Premium (220 g, best before date 06. 05. 2012, lot identification L11 126) was not much better. While the Polish producer promised fifty percent share of apricots, apricots virtually comprised only of 38, 1 % of the content.
Both samples were assessed by the Food Inspection Authority as deceptively labelled. CAFIA therefore banned further sale of both lots of jams and ordered their withdrawal from circulation. These shortcomings will be further dealt with individual importers. Based upon these findings, CAFIA will examine other similar products of different importers with the aim to verify the declared quality.
