Food Inspection Authority extends special inspection of fresh vegetables

05/30/2011

CAFIA Director General has decided todayto extend special area inspections of fresh vegetables throughout the entire territory of the Czech Republic. In the next two weeks, 260 samples of fresh vegetables will be taken. Samples are taken from all kinds of vegetables, not only from bio-cucumbers.
The result of inspections will be an overview on the state of Escherichia coli O104 contamination on the food market of the Czech Republic. Therefore, also samples from vegetables, which originate from others than risk countries (Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark), e.g. from Romania, Bulgaria, but also from the Czech Republic will be taken.
Notice from the RASFF System

The Food Inspection Authority received a report on dangerous cucumbers from the German side through the Rapid Alert System RASFF on Saturday after 9 p.m.
According tothe notice, cucumbers from Spain suspected of being contaminated with bacteria were delivered by a German supplier to the Czech Republic, namely to the company Country Life in Nenačovice near Beroun in past few days. It is a salad bio-cucumber; we do not have any information about contamination of some lots of common cucumber in the CR territory yet.
Ban on placing on the market

In the night from Saturday to Sunday, the CAFIA Headquarters issued instruction to impose a ban on circulation of this cucumber lot and immediate withdrawal if they were still in stores.
Inspection at the customer

On Sunday morning, inspectors carried out an inspection at the Czech customer who had received a consignment from Germany. It was about 120 pieces of the salad bio-cucumbers delivered from Germany on Wednesday and 96 pieces delivered on Friday.
The firstdelivery, i.e. 120 pieces got from the storage area to stores, part of them to the own company's stores - Country Life. The Inspection Authority immediately notified all sellers and started to withdraw the food. From the beginning of inspection on Sunday morning none of the cucumber has got to the consumers.
The secondconsignment was not from the lot on which the CAFIA was alerted by German authorities; however, it was the goods from the same German supplier. All 96 pieces were captured directly at the storage area and they were not delivered to the shops.
Hygienic advices

CAFIA recommends consumers to follow the normal hygiene rules when handling any fresh vegetables. Before eating, the vegetables should be thoroughly washed with hot water and if possible it should be always peeled. Inspection Authority eventually recommends cooking vegetables because the bacteria are destroyed when the temperature exceeds 70 degrees Celsius for minimum period of 2 minutes. It is also important to be particular about clean hands and used kitchen utensils.
The list of premises where the risk lot has been delivered

CAFIA found shops to which the risk bio-cucumbers were supplied. It was only few pieces. In addition to premises of company Country Life, it was the following stores:
