The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) detected sulphur dioxide in product sold under trade name “Candied Pears”, lot L: O 056, best before: 1. 10. 2011, packaging à 150 g; the amount of sulphur dioxide exceeded the admissible maximum limit almost four times.
Candied pears originated from China. Czech company K-SERVIS PRAHA, a.s. imported this product to the Czech Republic via the Netherlands. The company sold 937.5 kg of pears into small retails without invoices. Further 362.5kg of products were delivered to company České houby, a.s., where CAFIA inspectors revealed these non-complying pears. The Inspection Authority ordered to withdraw the product from the market.
Candied pears are commonly treated by fine spray of sulphur dioxide solution – so- called misting, however, the maximum admissible limits for this substance must not be exceeded. That is to say that sulphur dioxide in excessive concentration may pose a health risk.
With regard to the best before date, consumers may still have this product at home. CAFIA does not recommend its consumption. Information on the case was entered into the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) which notifies other member states of the European Union of similar products.
