Unlabelled spirits and tobacco with no revenue stamps found during inspections in Prague

01/17/2011

At the beginning of the last week, authorized personnel of CAFIA Prague carried out extensive inspections of food vendors at the SAPARIA market, Prague Disctrict IV, during which they banned the circulation of food in quantities exceeding 3500 kg.

Most retailers checked were selling food that was not marked with Czech labels or not labelled at all. Any food business operator is responsible to offer only food-stuffs labelled with all mandatory information in the Czech language, so that consumers get sufficient information of what he/she buys.

In some cases, the sellers also violated sanitary principles. Retail space was not kept clean and in good hygienic conditions, as testified by large quantities of dirt, dust and cobwebs.

CAFIA inspectors also seized several litres of spirits with no revenue stamps, offered in different packages and, among others, in mineral water PET bottles. According to sellers´ statement, it was supposed to be rice liquor. Several kilos of tobacco were confiscated, with a similar problem as with spirits – tobacco packages were not identified by revenue stamps. Customs Administration was invited to join the inspection to retain products within their competence (spirits, tobacco).

CAFIA strongly advises consumers to avoid buying unlabelled products and unstamped tobacco. The success of this inspection was also due to the presence of the Customs Administration. CAFIA intends to cooperate with Customs Authorities during controls of similar nature.
