Mr. Vít Obenrauch, Deputy Director at the Brno Inspectorate, Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority, participated in a seminar in Ramallah, West Bank, Palestine, on 6th December 2010. The seminar aimed at assessing the current state of food safety in Palestine and at offering some alternatives for the development of the local control structures. The organizer ofthe event wasthe UN, the Agency ofthe United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in cooperation with the Czech representation in Ramallah. Since the seminar was held with the financial support of the Czech Republic, Mr. Obenrauch explained the workshop participants the current situation in the Czech Republic in the field of food safety. His presentation was a part of the official programme.
Participants of the workshop discussed a number of issues including the role of laboratories as a toolto ensure safe food. Alternative control structures were also reviewed (in this section, participants from the Czech Republic and Austria explained the situation in thein home countries). The following day, seminar participants visited the Al-Quds University in Jerusalem, Faculty of Food Technology. On 8th December, the final meeting day, plenary discussion with representatives of ministries, food industry, food chamber and the students concluded this interesting event.
Participation of the CAFIA Authority in this seminar was certainly an important issue, beneficial for Palestine. Interest and involvement in this matter, as demonstrated by the participants and students, is a clear sign for politicians who are responsible for building structures to ensure safe food.
