CAFIA pays attention to controls of deceptive food labeling

12/22/2010

Although the main priority of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) is food safety, the Inspection pays great attention to controls of labeling, namely the detection of falsely labeled foodstuffs. CAFIA aims to protect economic interests of consumers and protect the interests of those food business operators complying with the rules that have been set to arrange for equal conditions at the marketplace.

Currently, most operators put into circulation foodstuffs in compliance with food laws. FBOs are aware that putting food into circulation means the obligation to inform fully about foodstuffs´ composition. If not, then they can be accused of misleading consumers. Information on the packaging can significantly affect customers´ decision whether to buy the food or not.

CAFIA has recently encountered this type of misconduct during the controls of frozen fish products in "Alaska” - Alaskan cod fillets, supplied by the Vita star company, country of origin: China (packages á 400 g, best before date 28. 6. 2012 and packages á 1000 g, best before dates 25. 6. 2012 and 11. 6. 2012). Products were sold in the Czech Republic by Kaufland, PLC.  Laboratory analyses revealed presence of additives (phosphates and citric acid in two batches), which, although they may be used, were not declared in the composition of the food. Kaufland therefore had to call off this product and withdraw it from circulation in all its outlets.

Each operator should respect the requirements that all product ingredients are clearly labeled on the packaging and consumers have all relevant information when considering the purchase of foodstuffs.
