“Burčák” inspections: Food Inspection Authority revealed first non-compliant samples

11/25/2010

Since August, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) has carried out inspections of “burčák” traders. Samples are collected throughout the Czech Republic in the period from 1st August to 30th November. Inspectors also check correct labelling of half-fermented wines, compliance with health regulations at the point of sale as well as appropriate purchase documents of vendors for the foodstuffs on offer.

So far, CAFIA laboratory in Brno has analyzed 26 samples - 13 samples of half-fermented young wines of the Czech origin (i.e. “burčák”) and 13 samples of partially fermented grape must, which is different from the Czech young wine as it doesn´t have to be made from local grapes. As for the composition of the analyzed samples of partially fermented grape musts: there were 3 samples of musts made from grapes from Slovakia, 7 samples of musts made from grapes from Hungary, a must sample produced from grapes originating from Italy and two samples produced in the Czech Republic from grapes harvested in different EU countries.

Out of the total 26 samples, ten analyzed samples failed to comply with legal requirements. As in previous year, dilution with water was very frequent method of adulteration of half-fermented wines and partially fermented grape must. Unauthorized added water was found in five samples; apart from the prohibited addition of water, three samples also revealed higher ethanol content from added sugar being above the allowable limit.

One sample of the partially fermented grape must failed due to higher ethanol content of added sugar being above the allowable limit.

Another detected method of mispresentation, for consumers certainly surprising, concerned labelling of partially fermented grape must, which can be labelled as „burčák“ provided it is made in the Czech Republic from the Czech and Moravian grapes. If this condition is not met, then it is unacceptable to use such description. Previous year's analyses showed four cases of falsification of half-fermented wines that way. CAFIA can disclose this kind of misleading consumers with its own unique laboratory equipment that operates on the principle of isotope analyses. It is based on combination of SNIF-NMR (Site-specific Natural Isotope Fractionation Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), IRMS (Isotope Ratio Mass Spectroscopy) and classical analyses. Using the analytical results achieved on these facilities, CAFIA is able to verify if the grapes used to produce half-fermented or partially fermented grape must have been harvested in the Czech Republic or elsewhere.

The sellers of non-complying half-fermented wines will be subject to administrative proceedings for misleading consumers. The inspections of half-fermented wine sellers will continue till the end of November, when, given the applicable laws, the sale of such products should be ceased.

For the results of the first analyses, see the table below.
