Templářské sklepy Čejkovice marketed wine with misleading labelling

11/16/2010

Within inspection focused on the verification of vine documentation, inspectors of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority revealed another company that had bought out grapes of unknown origin. Wine produced from such grapes was subsequently released into circulation as quality varietal wine of inland provenience.
Wine cooperative, Templářské sklepy Čejkovice bought more than 1 250 000 kg of grapes from company BJ VITIS s.r.o. based in Brno. This company is not a grape grower and the origin of the grapes was not known. The producer of these grapes thus cannot be traced. Purchasing documents and business documents issued by supplier BJ VITIS, s.r.o. failed to contain mandatory information on the grower. Company DOAL STAV, s.r.o. that supplied the grapes to company BJ VITIS, s.r.o. is not present on its seat and its mail box is not checked.
During the own production of wine, grapes of unknown origin were added to the ones of known origin which were thus degraded for the production and marketing of wine. The total volume of produced quality varietal wine and varietal wine of inland provenience of 2009 vintage is thus c. 1 080 000 litres of wine.
From the reason of the protection of the common wine market and the prevention of misleading consumers, CAFIA imposed ban of releasing wine in question into circulation and ordered to withdraw the whole amount of all lots of quality variety wines and varietal wine of the 2009 vintage that are reasonably suspected that they could have been produced from grapes of unknown origin.
Company Templářské sklepy did not keep proper and evidential vine documentation. This documentation was not completed even after the measure imposed in this matter. Thus, it is not possible to find out which wine lots were made from grapes of unknown origin. From this reason, the ban concerns all lots of quality varietal wine and varietal wine of inland provenience of the 2009 vintage made from grapes of the variety supplied by company BJ VITIS, s.r.o. (Rulandské modré, Modrý Portugal, Muškát moravský, Sauvignon, Tramín červený, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ryzlink vlašský, Rulandské šedé and Irsai Oliver).
"The case of Templářské sklepy and the previous Vinium case do disconcert me", Jakub Šebesta, the Director General of the Food Inspection Authority, said. "The level of your vine growing and wine making has significantly improved in recent years. Numerous Moravian wine makers may today compete with their foreign counterparts not only on the European but also on worldwide markets and such excesses seriously damage all our conscientious wine makers and the whole sector of wine making."
Administrative procedure will be initiated with the companies mentioned above. Considerable fines may be imposed in this procedure, as the conduct of the companies harmed not only consumers but also vine growers and winemakers.
