Inspection Authority banned sale of beans from China

11/10/2010

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority banned marketing of product labelled as "Beans coloured ARAX" (packaging à 500g, best before date 25. 6. 2011, 27. 9. 2011 and 24. 6. 2011). Inspection at Kaufland Česká republika, v.o.s. found packages of beans affected by moulds. Beans also showed strong smell of mould after they had been opened. Purchasing documents show that company Kaufland Česká republika, v.o.s bought beans in the amount of 3 868 pieces. The company was immediately ordered to withdraw all the lots of beans mentioned above from circulation.
The beans in question originated in China. They were imported to the ČR and packed into consumer packaging by company FOODISH s.r.o., Rudná near Prague. The company imported 19 tonnes of coloured beans to the Czech Republic. Approximately 7 tonnes were detained already in the storage of the company due to the suspicion of health unwholesomeness.  In total, 4 384 pieces of packages of beans assessed as non-complying were distributed to the retail network. Company FOODISH s.r.o. itself decided to withdraw products "Beans coloured ARAX" manufactured from the same raw material (packaging à 500 g and 5 kg, best before date 16. 2. 2011, 23. 2. 2011, 10. 3. 2011, 24. 3. 2011, 8. 4. 2011).
With regard to the fact, that goods with long best before date are concerned, consumers may still have them at home. The Inspection Authority therefore warns consumers against the consumption.

Information on the case was sent to the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed of the EU (RASFF).
