Inspection Authority warns against codfish liver from Poland

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority recently carried out an inspection pointed at the safety of tinned codfish liver. Samples were taken and a laboratory analysis for verification of the content of dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) was carried out. The limit for the content of these contaminants in codfish liver, which is laid down by the European Regulation applicable in all members states, is 25,0 picograms per 1 gram. No fewer than five samples exceeded the limit. All five products originated from Poland. Two products belong among the private brands of retails chains. The sellers, at which the samples were taken, were ordered to stop selling and to withdraw the unwholesome lots from the market immediately. Based on the preliminary carefulness principle, the ban was also imposed on other product lots of the same brand. The ban will be lifted only after the safety of the products will be proved.

Tins, at which the presence of dioxins and PCB exceeding the limit was confirmed, have a long date of durability. In case consumers have already bought them, it is thus possible that they have not eaten them yet. Although the codfish liver in question does not pose an imminent threat to a human, the Inspection Authority does not recommend its consumption.

CAFIA notified the State Veterinary Administration of the detection mentioned above. SVA is responsible for checks at the suppliers of these codfish liver. At the same time, information on the case was sent to all EU member states through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) for information.
