Food Inspection Authority revealed dangerous food supplement, already third this year

06/08/2010

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority ceaselessly pays high attention to checks of food supplements, in particular their safety. The Authority warned against five dangerous supplements in the previous year and deals already with a third case this year. Laboratory analyses revealed presence of substance aildenafil in food supplement Man Power claiming enhancement of men’s potency. The product in question was imported from Estonia. According to the health assessment of the Ministry of Health, any foodstuff containing this substance is dangerous for human health.
With its structure and effects, aildenafil is similar to sildenafil, which is a substance used in production of medicaments of which use has to be prescribed only by a physician on the basis of assessment of the patient’s health condition from the reason of undesirable effects. Presence of sildenafil or its analogues including aildenafil in foodstuffs sold over the counter is thus inadmissible. The assessment of the Ministry also says that aildenafil is not even used in the pharmaceutical industry yet as it is not examined sufficiently.
Following the laboratory analyses, the Food Inspection Authority banned releasing food supplement Man Power (packaging à 2 pills, batch with expiration date of 06/11) on the market. The Inspection Authority managed to reveal this supplement (batch) even though only 24 packagings were imported to the ČR. Other batches imported so far will be allowed to be released into circulation only after their importer – business operator Ms. Zuzana Knoflíčková from Hradec Králové – proves their safety by laboratory analyses. The supplement is produced by company NordMax Europe OÜ based in Estonia.
Should any consumer have the batch of the food supplement in question at home, the Inspection Authority does not recommend its consumption.
The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority is also a partner in the communication campaign focused on imitations of medicaments and illegal preparations currently run by the State Institute for Drug Control. More information about the campaign is available on www.nebezpecneleky.cz.
