The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority has already many times warned of the obligation of producers to indicate the presence of allergens on the food packaging. This year, CAFIA has already warned for example against rice flour with undeclared gluten, filled peppers and raisins which both contained undeclared sulphur dioxide. Waffles of which labelling failed to indicate peanuts were also withdrawn from the market.
Lactose, which is a disaccharide present in milk and which is also called milk sugar, ranks among allergens as well. People suffering from an metabolic disorder which makes digestion of lactose impossible have thus to be on a lifelong diet and avoid consumption of milk and milk products as well as of foodstuffs with added lactose, as consumption of these foodstuffs may cause them digestion problems. Also from this reason, it is necessary so that labelling of other foodstuffs specify information on the presence of lactose in case they contain it.
The laboratories of the Food Inspection Authority detected presence of lactose in deep-frozen chicken breast fillets (packaging à 1000g, date of production: 26. 11. 2009, best before: 26. 5. 2011) originating from Poland. In the ČR, they were sold in the retail chain Kaufland. Almost 10 000 kilograms of these fillets were sold. As lactose was not declared on the labelling, the Inspection Authority banned this product and ordered its withdrawal from the market. With respect to the long period of durability, consumers may still have them at home. If someone suffers from an intolerance to lactose, he/she should not consume them.
