CAFIA’s opinion on the erroneous interpretation of pesticide incidence in organic food

05/13/2010

Similarly to previous years, also this year CAFIA published the Report on Results of Planned Foreign Substances Inspection in Foodstuffs in 2009 on its websites. The results of pesticide residue analyses in organic food were interpreted by some media totally erroneously and in a misleading way. Therefore we consider it desirable to provide our opinion in this matter.
In 2009 the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority took 39 samples of organic food. A trace amount of pesticide residues was revealed by sensitive laboratory equipment in 10 of them (8 foreign and 2 domestic). However, all these values complied with the limits stipulated in legislation. No dangerous foodstuffs were concerned in any case; therefore CAFIA did not take any measures on the market.

Thus consumers have no reason to be afraid of organic food consumption.
