Cereals containing gluten, almonds, cashew nuts, pistachios, peanuts, milk, soya, mustard, celery, fish, crustaceans, eggs, etc. – there are allegies to all of these foodstuffs. People suffering from them have to accommodate their diet to limit in it or exclude from it completely the foodstuff, they are allergic to. For this reason it is necessary that producers state food composition correctly on the packaging. In case a foodstuff contains an allegen which is not declared in the composition, the foodstuff is dangerous to allergic people.
Allergens also include sulphur dioxide or sulphites in concentrations above 10 miligrams per kilogram of foodstuff. For this reason the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority banned packed raisins these days (Raisins – table grapes of dried grapevine á 100g, best before date 05.12.2010, batch L 068) in which laboratories had measured 180 miligrams of sulphur dioxide per kilogram. In spite of this, the sulphur dioxide was not declared on the packaging.
Banned raisins of Indian origin were imported to the Czech Republic by the company Pavel Stolarik – PS TRADE from Hodonín, namely in the amount of 750 kilograms. Of this amount the company Ing. Bohumil Kratochvíl – IBK Trade from Horní Cerekev packed 7200 pieces of consumer packagings. On the basis of the measure imposed by CAFIA 107,2 kilograms were withdrawn from the market, i. e. 1072 packagings. The rest had already been sold. In case somebody suffers from allergy to sulphur dioxide, he should not consume these raisins in any case.
Sulphur dioxide is used for preservation of foodstuffs, but it can also be used as an antioxidant. Most often dried fruits or wines are sulphurated.
