CAFIA finalized drawing financial resources from the Transition Facility program

07/21/2009

Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) successfully concluded two last projects financed by means of the Transition Facility program. Both projects were realized in the first semester of 2009 and their costs were fully covered by the EU financial resources.
The Partner of the first project named ‘Food adulteration’ was German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection. Its aim was to exchange knowledge from the domain of food adulteration control. Seven seminars took place in the framework of the project and selected CAFIA employees also took part in internships at the partnership organization. The seminars were aimed especially at laboratory methods for revealing adulteration of e. g. sweets, chocolate, coffee, tea, etc. The participants also had the possibility to compare practical approaches to controls in this area that are used by inspection authorities from other EU countries. The output of the project is also represented by the information brochure for consumers concerning food adulteration which will be available on the CAFIA web pages. The budget of the project, in which nearly 130 persons took part, amounted to 72 thousand Euro.
The second project ´Improved Implementation of Acquis in the Area of Food Safety Surveillance´ was realized in cooperation with the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety. The project was aimed at strengthening of CAFIA inspection and laboratory capacities in the domain of the European food law enforceability. Fourteen variously focused seminars were organized for this purpose in the framework of which 24 Austrian lectors trained approximately 340 CAFIA employees. Besides, the CAFIA employees took part in five study internships at partnership institutions in Wien, Innsbruck and Linz that were especially focused on laboratory methods (e. g. analyses of pesticides, mycotoxins, allergens and enterotoxins, etc.). CAFIA will utilize the knowledge among others for updating present analytical methods or implementation of the new ones. The possibility to compare the work procedures used with the inspection activity of both authorities also belongs to the project´s assets. The costs of the project amounted to 170 thousand Euro.
The Transition Facility program was created for the newly accessed countries as aide follow-up in regions where the administrative and institutional capacities have not yet been sufficient in comparison with present Member States. In 2008 state and public authorities of the Czech Republic could hand in project applications in this program for the last time. CAFIA gained the assets in total amount over 3.5 millions Euro by means of the Phare/Transition Facility fund.
