The biggest number of inspections is carried out by the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) directly in the shops. In case of foodstuffs of plant origin also production, transport and import from third countries are controlled. Within the scope of import control the CAFIA inspectors carry out inspection both directly at the border and on the domestic market in the premises of importers.
Thanks to these inspections it is often possible to retain the nonconforming foodstuffs even before their expedition into the shops where they can be bought by ultimate consumers. A case from this week can serve as an example. At the control of an importer the whole lot of soy sauce of Vietnam origin containing an excessive amount of the dangerous substance 3-MCPD (3-monochlor-1,2-propandiol) has been retained. Although the label declared that the soy sauce did not contain the substance 3-MCPD at all, laboratory analyses proved the content of 70 micrograms per one kilogram of foodstuff. Nevertheless, the limit amounts only to 20 micrograms.
CAFIA banned putting into circulation of this soy sauce. Therefore the importer decided to destroy the whole lot amounting to 2 400 pieces. Since the soy sauce has not reached the counters of shops at all, consumers are not endangered.
