CAFIA detained 18 tons of peanuts at the border

12/22/2008

Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority in collaboration with the Customs Administration in Prague detained a dangerous consignment of peanuts at the border. Official laboratory analysis proved exceeded limits of aflatoxins. The consignment, originating from China and weighting more than 18 tons, contained 610 sacks of shelled and un-roasted peanuts. Because of a high level of aflatoxins the consignment was not released to the commercial network in the Czech Republic. Consequently, the information was sent through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed to warn other EU member states.

Due to CAFIA precautions, contaminated peanuts will not reach retail and therefore there is not any risk to consumers.
