Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority will impose other heavy fines on Julius Meinl stores

09/26/2005

Other heavy fines will be imposed by the CAFIA on Julius Meinl stores in Prague and Tábor.

The Prague Inspectorate of the CAFIA will impose fines on a store at Václavské náměstí for using the same oven for baking meat products and at the same time for thawing and baking frozen bakery products. The regulations strictly prohibit such procedures because there is a danger of contaminating bakery products with raw meat. Moreover, the inspectors identified a number of hygiene deficiencies during inspection. For instance, among provably repeatedly frozen and thawed food, which is also strictly prohibited, they found 50 pieces of thawed semi-finished Ciabatta - Tomato, entirely overgrown with mould, which, according to the missing labelling, was not intended for disposal. The inspectors also found 11 kinds of foodstuffs with expired use by date and another 13 kinds of incorrectly sold foodstuffs with expired best before date.

Expired food has also been sold in Julius Meinl store in Novodvorská Street in Prague. The CAFIA identified a number of other deficiencies in these stores, concerning storing food and hygiene conditions of sale.

In another Julius Meinl store at Třída kpt. Jaroše, Tábor, regional manager of the store has invented a new method of selling meat products from wicker baskets that were placed not in, but on cooling display cases. When checking the storage temperature, the inspectors ascertained 12 kinds of products stored in inappropriate conditions (recorded temperatures were higher by up to 14oC) and for several times they imposed measures to remedy the situation. However, the regional manager prohibited saleswomen from changing the way of sale.

Administrative proceedings against the company have been recently initiated and the fines amount to hundred thousand crowns.
