CAFIA continues the quality controls of the sold fruit and vegetables

07/17/2002

The inspectors of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority repeated the extensive quality control of the fresh fruit and vegetables sold in big shopping chains and other shops.

The experience with a similar extraordinary inspection that was performed in August last year gave, thanks to its excessiveness (almost 14 thousand batches of fresh fruit and vegetables were inspected) an impartial picture of the condition of fresh fruit and vegetables sold at our market (14 % batches inspected did not conform with the requirements for food safety). The extensive inspection, however, did not result only in the imposing of penalties and actions taken. The Trade Association of the CR organised a meeting at the round table where the representatives of the shopping chains and the CAFIA staff analysed together the results of inspection of the fresh fruit and vegetables. It was clear from the joint discussion that it is in the interest of not only CAFIA but also the representatives of the big shopping chains to provide the consumers with high quality fresh fruit and vegetables and that it is necessary to take gradually some steps in order to improve the situation at the market.

This year in spring the Trade Association of the CR organised consultations for the managers of the shopping chains with CAFIA specialists on ”quality of fruit and vegetables” that intended to improve quality of the offered goods. The CAFIA experts focused especially on a detailed explanation of the respective standards relating to fruit and vegetables.

The results of the subsequent inspection showed that the quality of fresh fruit and vegetables sold not only in super and hypermarkets but also in local shopping chains has, indeed, significantly improved. The inspectors visited 150 premises and controlled altogether 2,406 batches of fresh fruit and vegetables, which were chosen of almost 6,400 batches offered in shops at the time of inspection. In consequence, the inspection identified 5.8 % of non-conforming batches, which is a distinctly better result in comparison with the last year.

But still, CAFIA will continue the extensive control of fresh fruit and vegetables. At the same time the working communication with shopping chains will continue. The next topic of consultations should deal with the food labelling.
