The number of patients suffering from coeliac disease is increasing as well as demand for reliable information on gluten-free foodstuffs

08/19/2005

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) inspected  during May, June and July gluten-free foodstuffs, foodstuffs which are naturally gluten-free as well as some foodstuffs in which gluten could occure in spite of consumers‘ expectation. CAFIA thus repeated regular yearly inspections which are performed in cooperation with coeliac associations. Foodstuffs, which are subject of inspections, are identified by CAFIA in cooperation with these associations.

All 28 samples, which were taken at 22 producers or sellers, were analysed in laboratory for content of gluten (gliadin). None of samples of foodstuffs, which were declared as „gluten-free“ or „naturally gluten-free“, did not contain more than tolerable amount of this substance, whose limit is determined by applicable decree as 10mg/100g of dry matter.

Gluten was proved in one sample of foodstuffs, in whose content of gluten can not be presumed by consumers and therefore they must be warned of its presence on the packaging. Buckwheat smooth flour produced by company PRO-BIO Ltd. from Staré Město pod Sněžníkem (500g, DMT 10.01.2006) thus had to be immediately withdrawn from the circulation. The producer commited deception of consumers and deficient labelling could pose a health threat to patients suffering from coeliac disease.

CAFIA is engaged in inspections of gluten-free foodstuffs in the long term and purposefully. According to information of „Expert group for coeliac sprue“ established by the Ministry of Health, the number of people suffering from this food intolerance is increasing in the Czech Republic. They are dependent on reliable information on gluten content in foodstuffs and therefore CAFIA regularly reports on results of these reccurent inspections in detail.

Table with inspection results (czech version only) is presented on CAFIA websites www.szpi.gov.cz
