The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) has recently investigated a suggestion for inspection concerning labelling of Vietnamese rice pasta. The ingredients listed on the label in English differed from ingredients listed in Czech. The consumer who drew CAFIA´s attention to this inconsistency through the Association for Consumer Protection noticed that wheat flour is listed in the composition in English, while in the Czech composition it is not. The CAFIA assessed this case as serious, since the consumer suffers from celiac disease and she must not consume foodstuffs containing gluten that is present in wheat flour.
However, laboratory analyses of three different types of rice pasta samples, taken directly from the importer, proved that products do not really contain gluten and therefore pasta does not contain wheat flour.
Although the composition of pasta stated on the label in Czech and English was inconsistent, the case cannot be considered as consumer deception. Information on foodstuffs that are sold on the Czech market must be in Czech and if it is true, consumer is not deceived, even though information in another language is different.
The results of laboratory analyses showed that the following foodstuffs do not contain gluten:
Těstoviny rýžové spirály (best before date of 09/04/2007), Těstoviny rýžové makarony (best before date of 09/03/2007), Těstoviny rýžové makarónky (best before date of 20/07/2006). All these types of pasta are produced by the Ho Chi Minh City Food Company Safoco Food Enterprise, Vietnam, to the Czech Republic they are imported by the Thus, spol. s r.o. company.
