Ketchups with pictures of tomatoes must bear their amount

06/08/2005

kecup.jpg The inspectors of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) were checking whether ketchups that on their packaging emphasize tomatoes (according to the decree “ingredient”), whether in pictures, words, or graphically, bear on their labels the amount of this ingredient. In order not to mislead consumers, producers, whether they produce ketchups or another foodstuff, are obliged in such cases to state this amount in the composition of the product.

The CAFIA checked directly in shops the labelling of 8 samples of different ketchups. The labels of three ketchups lacked the amount of tomatoes, although tomatoes were pictured on the labelling or emphasized in the name. Thus, consumers did not learn how many or how few tomatoes had been used for the production of ketchup.

Ketchups with misleading labelling were Philicon-pikant (1000g + 500g) and Philicon Jemný from Bulgarian producer Philicon 97, Plovdiv, and a Polish ketchup McDonald’s Tomato Ketchup (520g) of the Develey Polska Sp. producer from Warsaw. The CAFIA banned to place these products on the market and ordered to label them in line with legislation.
