The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority detected the limit exceeding values of aflatoxin in fried peanuts

03/20/2001

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority detected aflatoxin B1 in values exceeding the hygienic limit in a product with trade name Peanuts, fried, salty. The producer, Vitana a.s., Byšice, supplies with the peanuts COOP CENTRUM, a wholesale cooperative.

COOP CENTRUM with its headquarters in Prague was immediately ordered to withdraw the product from circulation in its own facilities as well as in the facilities of its customers.

CAFIA also performed inspection in the premises of the producer - Vitana, a.s., Byšice, production site in Roudnice nad Labem, who had imported these peanuts from the United States. CAFIA found out that the entire delivery contained the total of 23,944 kg of peanuts.

Aflatoxin B1 was detected in a batch identified: DV 19.10.2000, peanuts "COOP", fried, salty, 100 g, containing the total of 4,482 kg. The producer, then, based on CAFIA's instruction to let the remaining batches inspected, proved their safety.

Aflatoxin B1 is a carcinogenic product of some moulds, which can contaminate a wide spectrum of foodstuffs, especially of the plant origin. Once aflatoxin B1 is detected in a foodstuff, it is practically impossible to remove it, therefore, the producer has to dispose of the contaminated peanuts.
