Some honey sold in Czech stores is still of poor quality

02/08/2005

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) repeatedly checked honey sold in trade network. This inspection was a follow-up on previous inspections with similar focus the results of which were unsatisfactory.

The honey samples were analysed to determine the possible content of banned antibiotics and sulphonamides residues and to determine the presence of prohibited syrups based on starch, saccharose, cane or sweet corn. Furthermore, the CAFIA focused on quality inspection of honey.

Out of 28 samples inspected 11 samples failed to meet determined requirements (i.e. 39%). The samples did not comply with quality requirements in 13 cases; two samples were proven to contain antibiotics residues and one sample contained sulphonamides residues. The presence in honey of these banned substances residues that reach the final product through bees during their treatment is inadmissible.

One of the samples demonstrably contained sugar added from C-4 plants, which means that honey had been adulterated by adding sweet corn sugar or cane sugar. The producer thus could produce higher amount of honey and could enrich himself at the expense of consumers. As the relevant Decree provides for that it is not possible to add any other substances to honey, the producer committed consumer deception.

The CAFIA inspectors banned to sell unsatisfactory honey and communicated the outcome of inspection to the relevant veterinary bodies. These can further investigate particular cases directly at producers or importers.

With regard to results of this inspection, the CAFIA will continue to check the quality and safety of honey sold in stores.

Detailed results of inspection can be found at CAFIA website at www.szpi.gov.cz (Czech version only).
