According to the Czech standards that are harmonized with European standards, fresh fruit can be sold only if it is intact. Therefore it is not possible to offer cut fruit, fruit with cut-off parts or otherwise damaged fruit. Such fruit must also be properly labelled, for example, variety, country of origin and class must be specified on a visible place. The regulations do not determine temperature at which fresh fruit can be sold; however, the seller is responsible for compliance of fruit with quality requirements. The quality of fruit can be impaired, for example, by frost or heat.

The second group is processed fruit, which does not mean only marmalades and jams, but dried or fresh treated chilled fruit too, which can also be cut fruit. In these cases, producers must comply with strict hygiene requirements laid down for food production, must not use rotting or mouldy fruit and, of course, has the responsibility for its safety. Cut fruit can be sold only in intact closed packages, and the label must bear, among others, best before date and temperature at which such product should be stored. In stores it must be placed in cooling boxes where the temperature is maintained from 0 to 5°C.

The sale of cut fruit under these conditions is not prohibited by any legal regulation. However, consumers should pay attention to the best before date and should not buy such expired products if they are not stored in a cooling box or if fruit is rotting.
